The Law

Sexual assault is any unwanted, non-consensual sexual activity.

This includes any unwanted touching, kissing, grabbing, oral penetration, vaginal penetration and anal penetration.

Did you consent?
Consent must be given freely. This means that if you were forced, coerced, lied to, or manipulated into doing something sexual that you did not want to do then you were not able to give consent and may have been sexually assaulted.

Age of consent
The age of consent refers to the age when a young person can legally consent to sexual activity. All sexual activity without consent, regardless of age, is a criminal offence.

In Canada, the legal age of consent for sexual activity is 16 years.

However . . ..

A 12 or 13 year old can consent to sexual activity with another person who is less than two years older if there is no relationship of trust, authority, dependency or other form of exploitation.

A 14 or 15 year old can consent to sexual activity with another person who is less than five years older if there is no relationship of trust, authority, dependency or other form of exploitation.

'No means No' and only 'Yes means Yes'
Popular culture and the media want us to believe that most girls are sexually assaulted by strangers who use physical force to overpower them. This is a myth! Most girls are sexually assaulted by someone they know including dates, boyfriends and family members. 'No Means No' and only 'Yes means 'Yes'.
