Medical Care

If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted, getting medical care is important!

If you live anywhere from Burnaby to Boston Bar, British Columbia, you can call smart for help. smart is available 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year for anyone who has experienced a sexual assault.

Don't have a safe ride? smart provides transportation.

Concerned about pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections [STIs]? smart includes a forensic nurse who can provide preventative treatment for pregnancy and STIs.

Do I have to get a Rape Kit? Forensic evidence can be used to assist police in their investigation of a sex assault. The process of collecting forensic evidence is often referred to as a 'Rape Kit'. You have the right to make choices about all the medical treatment you receive after an assault. Forensic evidence will only be collected with your consent.

Is it too late? It's never too late to ask for help. While some medical treatments are time sensitive such as the collection of forensic evidence and taking the 'Plan B' pill [aka Morning After Pill] for pregnancy prevention, we recommend seeking medical care even if many days have past.

Can I ask for help and be anonymous? YES! smart has a 24-hour crisis line. You can call and ask questions for you or a friend without identifying yourself.
